Kenya Hara

Tokyo December

Tokyo Day One | After 8 years, I visited Tokyo once again. We were feeling so excited since we've arrived in the Narita Airport. After we have bought the tourist SUICA and N'EX tickets, we went for a cup of cappuccino in Starbucks while waiting for the N'EX. The hour on the train we were so looking forward to see the Tokyo city, and we were so amazed by the Japanese by how they follow the schedule, when they said the train would arrive at 16:09, it really arrived at 16:09.

We arrived in Shinjuku and we tried to find out the Shinjuku Washington, the hotel where we were staying, by following the map in my memory, "Exit from the south gate and then turn right, after 5 traffic lights then turn to the right and then left", and we really found it! We checked the photos of the hotel room from internet before the trip, and we were both saying it's a little bit too small, but when we saw it in real we were actually quite happy about the room, it is small but good enough.

We took a little bit rest and then we went finding something to eat. On the way Roman had set a rule: After 12pm we can only drink alcohol/caffeine. Around 7pm, we went into a very local little robatayaki restaurant, and we had some sake too. It wasn't too expensive, just around 2000Yen.

We walked around in Shinjuku and then we took subway to Tsugihagi Hibiya, to have a great dinner at Shunju. Actually there were 3 main aims for this trip: 1. Dine at Shunju; 2. To see most of the Super Potato's designs in Tokyo; 3. Tsukiji Fish Market. We had a very good first impression of Shunju, the big raw rock matches the grand red wine storage perfectly, they had created some private rooms in different size and shape by different elements, for example empty jars, this is the Super Potato style.

(Shunju had been rated as the Best Restaurant 2007 in Japan. The interior was designed by the famous Japan based design firm Super Potato, their works are all massive, eg. Grand Hyatt, Shunju, MUJI, Zuma & Roka.

我們各自叫了5 Dishes Menu(¥7,800)。

We wandered in Shinjuku until I was exhausted.

Tokyo Day Two | We slept over head, so it was quite a rush going to the Tsukiji Fish Market, as we wanted to see the fish auction. By taking the subway Oedo Line, it took 9 stations and around 20 mins from Shinjuku to Tsukiji. On the train, there were few old men holding baskets, I guessed they were heading to the fish market, too. When the train reached the Tsukiji station, we could already smell the fish. (lol) And those men were really going to the fish market, so me and Roman just tried to follow them. It was just Roman's wish going to the fish market, as he is a chef cooking Japanese foods. But then I started not to regret waking up so early, after I've seen all the BIG FISHES!

At the end we've missed the auction but it's good to walk around. There were so many giant seafoods, it widen my sight, really! Around 7am we've already finished the fish market, so we went to eat at Sushi Dai, a famous sushi place. We queued up outside the restaurant for around an hour and finally we could go inside. This is the first time I had sushi as breakfast! Maybe because of suffering the cold weather for an hour outside, so the warm steam sweet egg and the miso soup were just like the oasis in a desert. Roman ordered the Chef's Choice and I ordered from the menu, as I don't eat fish and raw foods at all...

After the special breakfast, we headed to the Tokyo Tower, on the way, there was a little park with all the leaves, we took some photos and we produced some falling leaves effect ourselves. It was just 10am after we've finished sightseeing the tower, so we went to Roppongi Midtown. We'd visited the "Water" exhibition at the 21_21 Design Sight, one of the design "Water Pachinko" was designed by the Japanese Graphic Design master Kenya Hara, it amazed me and Roman so much!

21_21 Design Sight is a new exhibition place directed by Issey Miyake, and was design by architect Tadao Ando. It's located in the Roppongi Midtown outdoor area)

In Roppongi Hill, there were some German kiosks, Roman was so excited because he misses home so much. And it reminded me of the X'mas I had in Bern 2 years ago!

There are so many Super Potato's deisgns in Roppongi Hills and mostly located inside the Grand Hyatt Hotel, so we visited most of them, 3 restaurants and the indoor swimming pool in Grand Hyatt. It was just COOL! After all that, we walked around in Harajuku. The whole time me and Roman couldn't help stop singing the song Harajuku Girl by Gwen Stefani, it was really so stupid! haha...
